What Is Shiny Object Syndrome?
I was asked this question the other day and, to tell you the truth, I was kind of shocked. I thought everyone was familiar with Shiny Object Syndrome (S.O.S.) – shows what I know.
Although I think that S.O.S. may mean something a little different to each person, my definition of Shiny Object Syndrome is chasing after “the next great thing” without actually implementing/using/taking action on any of them – or at least not to the extent that any results could be measured before being distracted by the next “must-have” thing.
Of course, this is my definition and if anyone has a better one, please feel free to comment.
I have followed just about every guru, expert, master, marketer, dominator, crusher, maven and whatever else they call themselves. This is not to say that I haven’t received great information, I simply haven’t used it because I was always looking for, chasing after and hoping that the next “object” I go after will be “the one” …
Sure, it begins innocently enough. Sign up for a newsletter to get a free report about [ fill in the blank with your desired goal ] and then purchasing the product from the “Welcome E-mail”. Now you’re signing up for a free teleseminar with one of their “buddies” who happens to have a similar, but complementary, product that will enhance or build upon the first product.
Of course, this means you are now on two mailing lists, which is still pretty benign. Until the second person tells you about a program that he/she is affiliated with that will take you to the next level.
Yeah, you’ve just signed up to be added to a third e-mail list and it is only 11:30 AM.
Now the third person tells you about one of their “friends” who is about to release a phenomenal, one-of-a-kind, gotta-have-it product and you really need to get on their notification e-mail list so you’ll be “the first one to hear” when the product is available, AND you can get their free report which will reveal some secret that you need to know about before it becomes widely available.
Thus, the never-ending cycle begins …
NOW before you go angrily clicking “unsubscribe” to all the e-mail lists you’re on, you first need to decide WHAT IT IS YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE. I wish someone would have given me this extremely important piece of advice long ago, “If you don’t have a purpose for doing something, you probably shouldn’t do it!”
So before we get into it, what is it that you want to achieve? What’s the goal? What is your desired outcome? Maybe you would like to start an online business; maybe you want to get healthier; maybe you want better relationships with your family/friends/loved ones; maybe you have a variety of things you want to improve. Whatever it may be, you probably have numerous books, e-books, audios, etc … on the subject(s). So let’s pick one and move forward … The keyword here is FOCUS …
By the way, I’m still figuring out this whole blog stuff, so if you want to get in touch with me you can e-mail me at Admin@ShinyObjectRehab.com.
