What Really Happened?

Okay, so it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve posted – closer to two and a half weeks – and I’ve previously posted that I am back on track.  So what really happened?

First, an unexpected incident threw me off course.  Did it have to?  NO, but I let the event be my excuse for “taking some time for me.”  Let’s face it folks, no matter how well we prepare for it, life is gonna happen!  That doesn’t mean that we have to stop ( like I did ).  It means we have to assess the situation, adjust the course and keep moving forward … that’s all!  Yes, it really is that simple.

So let’s look at what really happened:

First, I didn’t have a contingency plan.  Yes, life happens and we have to adjust for those little hiccups, speed bumps and unforeseeable circumstances that are sure to arrive at the most inconvenient of times.  I promise you, they will happen!

For instance, there is no internet service at the office today AND the service provider has taken today off for the Presidents Day Holiday.  I know I have internet service at home, so I went about my work business at the office as far as I could without the internet and now I am finishing up internet related work at home.  It’s not to focus on what could go wrong, but it’s nice to have a Plan B … just in case and, most importantly, contingency plans help reduce stress!

Second, I gave myself an unrealistic goal – I was going to post every day … maybe even two or three times a day if necessary.  Though my intention was good, I know better that to put this kind of idealistic demand on myself – I admit that I am not very disciplined, but I am getting better.  It would have been more reasonable to say that I would post as often as necessary with a minimum of a two posts a week.

“Discipline Is The Bridge Between Goals and Accomplishment.” ~ Jim Rohn

Third, the fact is that, although I know this will prove to be a very beneficial experience, I thought it was going to be fun – failing to realize that, for me, change is not fun!  Still, I felt that this would be an enjoyable adventure – not realizing that there would be some real work involved and I’m not the type of person who equates work with fun.  So there is some necessary maturing needed on my part, as well.

“Change Is Inevitable; Growth Is Optional.” ~ John C. Maxwell

So what was the result?

You may have already guessed …

I purchased another product …

Did it meet my criteria?  It came from a very TRUSTED SOURCE; It was WAY TOO INEXPENSIVE to pass up ( I know how much value Paul Myers gives with his products ); It is something I WANT TO LEARN ( and honestly, I feel that I should be able to grasp this idea, I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it ); and I WILL BE USING IT NOW.  So YES, it met my criteria for purchase ( although, let’s be clear that the “price” is NOT the criteria “VALUE” is! ).  Still, had I kept on track with what I was doing before veering off track, would I have purchased this product?  Yes, I do believe so!

That’s enough for today.  I know my thoughts are still pretty scattered and, in time, they will start to coalesce which will be the first sign that true change is happening.

Tonight we crack open Kevin Hogan’s book, The 168-Hour Week: Living Life Your Way 24/7”.  Though I’ve read the book previously, NOW I will be following along and actually doing the exercises outlined.

Until next time … Keep Moving Forward!

Back On Track – Update

Here’s the deal … Kevin Hogan Rocks!!!

For those of you who have not yet subscribed to Coffee with Kevin Hogan, he has given me permission to link to his article “Make It Happen Mindset” … Which, I am sure that after you read it, realize the immense value and tremendous insights, you will make the best possible decision and sign up for your weekly dose of Coffee.

Just to give you a taste:

Make It Happen Mindset

By Kevin Hogan

You might have an idea about what success means to you.

For me, success is as much a frame of mind as it is results that made “it” all worthwhile.

Achievement is just that. It means you achieved something.

Now, I’ve run in to a lot of people who have a strict “Money Mindset”.

I don’t like the Money Mindset because it means the goal is to generate as much revenue as possible. It doesn’t incorporate the impact on those who interact with the individual. In other words, it’s a zero sum game for the Money Mindset. Person A wins, Person B loses.

I don’t like it.

I like achievement. I like to accomplish X. I like success. Being successful means more than money. It’s about reputation, people’s appreciation and valuation of my work and so forth.

The Make It Happen Mindset

And I LOVE the Make It Happen Mindset.

The Make it Happen Mindset causes success and achievement. And success can be a bit different for each person.

Back On Track

So exactly where the heck have I been and why haven’t I posted anything?  Good questions.  I’d love to give some “valid” excuse or make a dramatic appeal for my absence, but the fact is that I just didn’t keep up with what I was doing.

Seeing that I am in “Rehab, I guess this would be chalked up to being a relapse.

So where do we go from here?  That’s easy … we pick up where we left off and continue forward.  There’s no use in “beating myself up” and/or berating myself or behavior.

Why the sudden post and ready to roll attitude … well, if you’re subscribed to Coffee with Kevin Hogan, then you’ve read his beyond brilliant article “Make It Happen Mindset” and the rest is history.   If you’re not subscribed – first off, WHY NOT?!? – then SIGN UP www.KevinHogan.com!   Each year, Kevin writes about 10 articles that, if you take the proper actions, can make you a significant amount of money and gain incredibly valuable insight ( more so than with other articles, in which you will ALWAYS get valuable nuggets of wisdom ).

This article was different.  I can’t stand the word “priceless” as, to me, it sounds like there is no value.  I prefer the phrase, “Valuable Beyond Measure.”  This article is just that – Valuable Beyond Measure!  It is the foundation of all success and the Good Doctor, giving freely,  held nothing back.

Anyway, I’m not going to get into anything about anything.  I am just simply saying that I am back and on track.  And although there is A LOT going on in my life right now – you know the saying “life happens” – this blog remains a top priority.

I guess I might explain a few things in other posts, but suffice it to say that I allowed the other things that are going on to be my “excuse” for not taking care of business.  That ends today!

Until next time … Make It Happen!!!

Still Detoxing

OH MAN!!!  I came THIS CLOSE ( visualize my fingers being really close together ) to almost purchasing another “make money now” ebook … I mean, it was only $7 and it had “proven strategies”, “closely guarded secrets” and I could learn how to make “automatic cash” PLUS I could have “shocking results with hours”.

Well, the “shocking results” would probably be that I wouldn’t make any money from it, as I have no plan to implement any tip, trick, technique and what have you … and I would be shocked that “investing” the $7 didn’t net me $1,000’s of dollars.

Some of the usual “triggers” were used:

  •  I’d make money instantly.
  •  I didn’t need experience.
  •  I could make money without spending money.

 And the EVER POPLULAR:

I COULD EARN MORE MONEY WHILE SPENDING LESS TIME WORKING FOR IT!

Here’s the clincher folks, it’s not their fault!  For all I know, this product is brilliant and besides, it came from a “trusted source” – someone who I would purchase from ( Yes, I have criteria for whom I will purchase from ) – but the fact is I don’t have a strategy for implementing any of the ideas that are presented AND, I probably own AT LEAST 10 ( probably closer to 30 ) books that offer these exact same promises … HECK, I probably own this exact e-book ( which is gathering the proverbial dust on my hard drive ).

So why did I open the e-mail AND click through to the sales page?

  •  It came from a trusted source.
  •  I am looking to start an online business.
  •  It was only $7.

What to do?  I will be unsubscribing from this list – it’s not personal, and I think he knows it, too ( most internet marketers do ).

Let’s look at it this way, if we purchased 5 e-books like this a month for $7 each and we don’t implement the ideas, let alone even read the book ALL THE WAY THROUGH, that is $35 wasted ( not invested ) a month for 12 months – that is over $400 for the year ( $420 to be exact ) and we haven’t made any money because we haven’t used any of them?!?!?

The math doesn’t add up and, therefore, this is NOT a good decision!

Time to get rid of the “It’s Only $7” mentality.  It would make more sense to purchase 1 or 2 e-books for $97 each or a course with complete information for $300 once a year and use every bit of the information presented – actually, it would be better to come up with a plan, goal and/or desired outcome and figure out the steps that are going to get us there.

That will be in the next post.

What To Expect In Rehab?

Honestly, No Clue!

There is sure to be some useful tidbits of information that can be helpful, however, there is no “set plan” … not yet, anyway.  The only “plans” at this point are:

  • Going through Shelby Collinge’s Problems eCourse which began on Tuesday February 1st ( which is not available to the public as of yet – which is also the last thing I signed up for before entering rehab ).

  • Reading and following the exercises in Kevin Hogan’s The 168-Hour Week: Living Life Your Way 24/7” ( it’s a pleasure to read his books, but you don’t read his books for pleasure – he actually makes you do work … if you choose ).

You can find out more about each by clicking on the above links and if you purchase anything I may or may not make money on them – who knows, I’m still figuring this stuff out :)

As this is being used as a daily journal, I imagine that posting every day will be in order – maybe even a couple of times a day (?).  I am hoping to find people, who have beaten Shiny Object Syndrome, to share some of their useful tips, tricks, strategies and ideas.

Seeing that I have just “entered into rehab” I figure I will take some time to get adjusted – a detox, if you will.  Yes, there are still offers piling into my e-mailbox and frankly, it is tempting to open them and take advantage of the New Shiny Object …

There are only a few e-mails that I open without hesitation and, whole-heartedly, recommend you subscribe to ( NO, I do not make anything from these recommendations ):

  • Anything from Kevin Hogan ( of course ), especially Coffee with Kevin Hogan – Get Your Coffee at www.KevinHogan.com ( has more real value in this than most $99 per month E-zine subscriptions ).  I am partial to Coffee on Video – did we discuss that I was lazy???

  • Anything from Shelby Collinge – I own most, if not all, of her programs and am currently going through here 45 Day Problems eCourse– Get your daily Drops of Inspiration at Drops of Inspiration ( regularly $249 for the year ).

There are a couple other lists I am subscribed to that have been CAREFULLY SELECTED, but because I don’t want you to be distracted, they will not be mentioned.

I have been subscribed to Shelby’s list and to Kevin’s list for YEARS and I think they are the only two that I have never unsubscribed from ( not saying I implemented anything they taught me, but that’s on me, because I was jumping from one thing to another to another to another ……… )

Other than that, as I get more clear on the path I am traveling, a set plan will become more apparent and a better foundation will be laid down at that time.

What Is Shiny Object Syndrome?

I was asked this question the other day and, to tell you the truth, I was kind of shocked.  I thought everyone was familiar with Shiny Object Syndrome (S.O.S.) – shows what I know.

Although I think that S.O.S. may mean something a little different to each person, my definition of Shiny Object Syndrome is chasing after “the next great thing” without actually implementing/using/taking action on any of them – or at least not to the extent that any results could be measured before being distracted by the next “must-have” thing.

Of course, this is my definition and if anyone has a better one, please feel free to comment.

I have followed just about every guru, expert, master, marketer, dominator, crusher, maven and whatever else they call themselves.  This is not to say that I haven’t received great information, I simply haven’t used it because I was always looking for, chasing after and hoping that the next “object” I go after will be “the one” …

Sure, it begins innocently enough.  Sign up for a newsletter to get a free report about [ fill in the blank with your desired goal ] and then purchasing the product from the “Welcome E-mail”.  Now you’re signing up for a free teleseminar with one of their “buddies” who happens to have a similar, but complementary, product that will enhance or build upon the first product.

Of course, this means you are now on two mailing lists, which is still pretty benign.  Until the second person tells you about a program that he/she is affiliated with that will take you to the next level.

Yeah, you’ve just signed up to be added to a third e-mail list and it is only 11:30 AM.

Now the third person tells you about one of their “friends” who is about to release a phenomenal, one-of-a-kind, gotta-have-it product and you really need to get on their notification e-mail list so you’ll be “the first one to hear” when the product is available, AND you can get their free report which will reveal some secret that you need to know about before it becomes widely available.

Thus, the never-ending cycle begins …

NOW before you go angrily clicking “unsubscribe” to all the e-mail lists you’re on, you first need to decide WHAT IT IS YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE.  I wish someone would have given me this extremely important piece of advice long ago, “If you don’t have a purpose for doing something, you probably shouldn’t do it!”

So before we get into it, what is it that you want to achieve?  What’s the goal?  What is your desired outcome?  Maybe you would like to start an online business; maybe you want to get healthier; maybe you want better relationships with your family/friends/loved ones; maybe you have a variety of things you want to improve.  Whatever it may be, you probably have numerous books, e-books, audios, etc … on the subject(s).  So let’s pick one and move forward … The keyword here is FOCUS …

By the way, I’m still figuring out this whole blog stuff, so if you want to get in touch with me you can e-mail me at Admin@ShinyObjectRehab.com.

Shiny Objects Everywhere

Well, today is the first day of the rest of my life.

No, Seriously!!!

I just wanted to get something up here other than the standard “Hello World!” that comes pre-loaded, courtesy of WordPress.

So here’s the deal, I’ve chased after just about every trick, tactic, technique, strategey, method, course, e-book, audio, teleseminar, video-series, etc … you name it, I own it – 2 hard drives full of *ahem* stuff!

No More!  I have officially checked my overwhelmed and near to broke butt into rehab to stop chasing every Shiny Object out there!

Follow me on my journey … it’s gonna be fun :)
